A lot of family tension comes from topics that never get properly aired: chores, screens, weekends, small perceived injustices. A family meeting gives them a time and a place — which keeps them from exploding in the middle of dinner.
The format that works: 20 minutes max, a fixed day, three parts. First, appreciations — everyone thanks someone for something from the week. Second, the issues to solve, collected on a list anyone can add to during the week. Third, something fun to plan together. Kids take turns chairing the meeting — even little ones, with help.
The first few meetings can feel awkward. Hold on for three weeks: once kids realize their voice truly counts, they start bringing their own topics — and negotiating instead of shouting.
