Why this printable exists

Reasoning is offline in the middle of a meltdown. Nobody, at any age, learns a new coping strategy while flooded. That is why the plan has to exist before the storm, written together on an ordinary afternoon, in the child's own words, so that in the moment there is nothing to invent — only something to follow.

What's inside

  • A section for the body signals that warn anger is coming
  • Five numbered strategy lines, filled in by the child rather than the adult
  • A calm corner checklist for what actually lives in that space
  • A practice date and signature lines for both child and parent

How to use it

  1. Step 1. Fill it in on a calm day, and let your child choose the strategies
  2. Step 2. Rehearse it once as a game, so the plan is familiar before it is needed
  3. Step 3. Treat the corner as a refuge, never as a punishment or a time-out chair

Where it fits in the Method

This page belongs to the Plan step of the FamilyDecode Method: you've decoded the friction, and this is the tool that turns the decision into something visible your family can follow. Review it at your weekly family meeting and adjust as your children grow.

Questions families ask

Is this just a time-out in disguise?

No, and the difference matters. A time-out sends a child away as a consequence. A calm-down plan is a place they choose, often with you nearby, and nothing about it is punitive.

What if they refuse to use it mid-meltdown?

That is common early on. Stay close, stay quiet, and offer once. The plan works best after several calm rehearsals, and its real value often shows up months later.

At what age does this work?

From about four, once a child can name two or three strategies. Teenagers use a version of the same page, usually with music, a walk, or a door they are allowed to close.
